The rock mechanics and earthquake physics laboratory at Sapienza started in 2019 thanks to the award “Dipartimenti di eccellenza” given to the top six department across Italy. The idea was to combine different disciplines in one place where cross fertilization of knowledge can grow spontaneously.
The apparatuses in the laboratory span from the deep mantle with a rotative Multi Anvil, to the most superficial crust where earthquakes take place with a bi-axial and a true tri-axial apparatus. To characterize the rocks we deform, we can take advantage of a XRD machine to study sample mineralogy and a picnometer to study rock porosity. We do not lack in rock preparation equipment with a high precision grinder machine and a coring machine to prepare sample to deform tri-axially.
